Children’s Health Project

Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Health and the Children’s Health Fund want to help keep your children healthy. Because our services are mobile, we partner with community sites to go where the children are and provide them easier access to medical care on the Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Health Blue Bus. If your child already has a regular doctor, you may still wish to contact us to see how we may be able to partner with your child’s doctor in providing on-site medical services.

Our pediatric primary care mobile medical unit offers:

Medical care for children 0 - 21 years of age

Well-child check-ups

Sick visits (colds, sore throats, earaches, headaches, injuries, etc.)

Sports physicals

Immunizations/vaccinations

Wellness screenings

Referrals to pediatric specialists

School Nurse Program

School nursing is a specialized practice of nursing that supports student health for development and academic success. Our school nurses and school care teams are leaders who connect healthcare and education, provide care coordination and advocate for quality student-centered care.

Our school nurses support children in the 80+ schools in the Baton Rouge area in a variety of ways:

Managing orders and medication for children who have unique needs.

Referral to higher levels of care

Providing routine care in addition to care in times of trauma or crisis

Communication with your child’s specialist or pediatrician.

Supporting educators by providing training on handling the unique health needs of a child in the classroom.

Routine screenings such as hearing and vision and asthma control

Sick care appointments with nurse practitioners via telehealth.

Safe, Hopeful, Healthy Program

The Safe, Hopeful, Healthy program (SHH) is a community-based, community-designed program to provide young people with positive experiences to improve their lives and stay connected. Our goal is to work with students and families to improve academic performance, school attendance and conduct. We want to equip students with the skills and resiliency to make good choices and experience.

Our dedicated team of health and wellness managers, licensed mental health professionals and counselors are here to support every student in our program. We see our role as making sure that all needs are met, victories are celebrated and challenges overcome.

How much does the SHH program cost?

Students can be referred to the program through multiple ways, including administrators, teachers, guidance counselors, nurses and from other programs.
Who is sponsoring Safe, Hopeful, Healthy?

This program is a partnership between the Office of East Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broom and Our Lady of the Lake Children Health’s Healthcare Center in Schools.
What makes this program different?

We are inside schools and meet with teachers regularly.
What is the commitment from students?

Students meet at least once per week with their health and wellness manager.
What is the commitment from the student's family?

We engage the parents/guardian of the student weekly or as needed. The parents/guardian will also have access to the health and wellness program manager.
Do parents need to sign a consent form to participate in the program?

When the student is referred, a consent form must be completed by the parent/guardian if the student is under 18 years of age.
Do parents need to sign a consent form for students to participate in field trips?

The parent/guardian must sign a permission slip to attend.
What rewards do you offer students?

The students will go on a monthly field trip and receive invitations to school and community events.
