Our Lady of Lourdes Continues Its Legacy of Cancer Care Excellence in Acadiana

July 15, 2025

Lafayette, LA – After four decades of cancer care innovation and excellence in Acadiana, Our Lady of Lourdes Health continues its legacy of prevention, early detection, treatment and survivorship care, ensuring area families have the resources they need to survive and thrive.

Home to the region’s first cancer program, Our Lady of Lourdes Health sustains its healing legacy through significant investments in new technology, services and care options for those impacted by cancer in its many forms. Included is a growing roster of specialists in hematology and oncology, women’s health, colon and rectal surgery, surgical oncology and imaging. In addition, Our Lady of Lourdes maintains its focus on treating the whole person – mind, body and spirit – providing a higher level of care and services right here at home, so cancer detection, treatment and recovery doesn’t have to involve travel plans.

“We are building on a firm foundation set 40 years ago with experience and innovation,” said Tracy Delhomme, Our Lady of Lourdes Health vice president of oncology and clinical operations. “We are driven to secure the brightest minds and the most advanced tools available providing the highest level of quality care. This way patients can receive the best care possible at home, close to their loved ones and support network. That’s what they desire. That’s what we deliver. Because it all counts here.”

A Commission on Cancer-certified facility, Our Lady of Lourdes JD Moncus Cancer Center is accredited by the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI) – the only facility in Acadiana and only one of four in the state recognized for meeting QOPI’s rigorous standards for safety, quality and patient experience. Multiple providers with over 130 years of combined experience and more than 10 nationally certified oncology nurses at the center offer unmatched knowledge, insight and dedication, ensuring the care for every patient meets the highest standards in cancer diagnosis, treatment, recovery and survivorship care.

“We’re able to take care of some problems that, traditionally, we used to have a very heartfelt and sad conversation about,” noted Dr. Henry Kaufman IV, a board-certified surgical oncologist who manages more than 40 different types of rare, complex cancer cases each month at the Our Lady of Lourdes JD Moncus Cancer Center. “We’re offering hope and options to people that just wasn’t there before.”

Over the past two decades, innovations in diagnosis and treatment led to advancements in early detection and treatment-related complications, making it easier for specialists to better manage side effects that once cast a shadow over cancer care. Another benefit is the growing number of cancer survivors, as cancers are being found in earlier stages. The earlier the cancer is found, the better the potential outcome. Among these newer developments are progressive forms of chemotherapy that, unlike their more toxic predecessors, unleash the potential of the immune system. Essentially, these newer options use the immune system to aggressively target cancer in the body.

“There are things available now that we only dreamed about 30 years ago,” Dr. Kaufman shared. “The results we are seeing are so dramatic we are having to change the paradigm of how we deal with cancer surgically and with other therapeutic options.”
