Our Lady of the Lake Reaccredited for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery

February 26, 2024

Baton Rouge, LA — Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center and Our Lady of the Lake Ascension have been reaccredited under the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP), a joint quality program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). They were the first in the region to be accredited in 2010.

MBSAQIP is a comprehensive, nationwide surgical quality program aimed at ensuring the safe and effective performance of metabolic and bariatric surgery. Surgical outcomes focus on weight loss and the treatment of obesity-related diseases, such as diabetes, sleep apnea and others. Research shows accredited centers experience lower complications and better outcomes than that of non-accredited facilities.

"For 100 years, Our Lady of the Lake Health has been committed to serving our community with best-in-class surgical services, the best providers in the region and the most advanced technology,” said Chuck Spicer, President of Our Lady of the Lake Health. "This reaccreditation highlights not only our ongoing dedication to excellence but also our leadership in ensuring that our community has access to the most innovative and comprehensive treatments. We will continue to strive to set a new standard for quality and compassionate care."

MBSAQIP accreditation requires an independent, voluntary and rigorous peer evaluation in accordance with nationally recognized bariatric surgical standards. This accreditation promotes uniform standard benchmarks and continuous quality improvement.

In addition to being MBSAQIP-accredited hospitals, Our Lady of the Lake and Our Lady of the Lake Ascension are also ACS Surgical Quality Partners signifying the hospitals’ dedication to consistently improving procedures and approaches, while maintaining a critical eye on process at every step.

"Our dedicated team highlights the core values that form the foundation of our program,” said Mark G. Hausmann, MD, FACS, FASMBS, Medical Director, Our Lady of the Lake Health Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Service. “This recognition motivates us to continue delivering integrated, comprehensive services, ensuring that patients receive top-tier care and treatment before, during and after surgery."
