As an expert in cancer care management, the Nurse Navigator can also answer any clinical questions patients may have.
In addition to working with patients, our Nurse Navigator serves as a liaison throughout the Lourdes Cancer Network and in the community regarding cancer services and referrals.

Childhood cancer is the second most common cause of death in children in the United States. In southwest Louisiana, there is help available right here in Acadiana. The Pediatric Hematology/Oncology program Our Lady of Lourdes Women's & Children's Hospital specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and blood disorders such as hemophilia, sickle cell disease and bleeding disorders in children.
Since opening more than 10 years ago, our pediatric hematology/oncology program has continued to acquire a growing list of highly skilled, educated, experienced, and compassionate physicians and staff to treat an increased patient volume with varying types of cancer and blood disorders. Along the way, we’ve continued to establish strong, well-founded relationships with multiple community partners to ensure patients and their families experience comprehensive care right here in Acadiana without having to travel away from their built-in support system of family, friends and neighbors.
The program now serves 16 parishes with a pediatric population of 300,000 – including clinic locations in Lake Charles and Alexandria. While the number of patients we treat continues to grow, our program has maintained a more than 90 percent success rate. It continues to be a sincere honor and privilege to serve and work with such amazing families in Acadiana.
Lourdes provides access to the finest surgical care available in Acadiana. Our advanced surgical team and oncology specialists have performed thousands of surgeries on many types of cancers with great precision and success.
As an important part of cancer care, surgery may be performed at different stages and for different purposes. We offer surgical procedures, including biopsies (obtaining tissue for diagnosis), staging (determining the extent of the disease), tumor removal and reconstruction of affected parts of the body and medical device implantation.
Following surgery, patients can recover in our dedicated inpatient oncology unit, which provides an environment specific to their cancer treatment needs.
Lourdes offers more than just cancer care. We treat our patients as the people they are, supporting their physical, mental and spiritual health. Surviving cancer brings its own challenges that impact every aspect of life in its “new normal,” and we help our patients make life after cancer the best it can be.
Once cancer treatment is complete, they start the next phase of their cancer journey: being a survivor! A survivorship visit with our oncology physician assistant discusses what type of support the patient may need, focusing on general health, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and mental health, managing anxiety and any concerns about cancer recurring. This extension of care provides reassurance during the transition from patient to survivor.
Patients also get connected to resources such as Miles Perret Cancer Services, its Thrive 365 program and Our Lady of Lourdes’ Camp Bluebird.
