St. Dominic Health Implements New Infrared Imaging Technology to Improve Cancer Survivorship and Outcomes

June 09, 2025

Jackson, MS - St. Dominic Health, a Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System (FMOLHS) hospital, announced its adoption of the InVision Pathology Imaging System, an infrared imaging technology designed to better identify lymph nodes in surgical specimens during cancer treatment. The goal is to better assess the stage of cancer in patients. St. Dominic Health is utilizing the technology for all cancers that involve lymph node analysis as part of the staging process, including breast, colon, small bowel, stomach (gastric), and pancreatic cancers.

“As St. Dominic Health strives to deliver the highest quality cancer care and treatment in our region, we are proud to introduce this innovative technology to our patients improving cancer survivorship and outcomes,” said Teri Dyess, MD, chief medical officer at St. Dominic. “This advancement empowers our clinical team to fulfill St. Dominic Health’s mission of serving the health of our community with the most advanced diagnostics available.”

In a recent study of 104 patients, the InVision Pathology Imaging System was shown to increase lymph node detection in 86.5% of cases and led to staging changes in 3.8% of cases, with no added risk to patients. According to the American Joint Cancer Committee (AJCC), the number of lymph nodes examined is correlated with the survival rate of cancer patients. Traditionally, the standard of care for identifying lymph nodes has been manual palpation which is extremely inconsistent and time-consuming. The InVision technology improves efficiency and minimizes revisiting cases when not enough lymph nodes are found through traditional methods.

“In treating cancer patients, St. Dominic Health seeks to apply every tool at its disposal to improve outcomes,” said Randall Smith, MD, a pathologist at St. Dominic Health. “The InVision imaging technology provides a major advantage in more efficiently and reliably determining the stage of cancer through lymph node analysis, which can make an important difference in a patient’s treatment journey and success.”

About InVision
